SPONGE IRON

OVERVIEW

Sponge Iron or Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) is when Iron-ore pellets are reduced directly into a solid state.
The outcome is a highly pure metal with all impurities being removed. Minera produces 79 min Fe (m) grade Sponge Iron with low Gangue content and is very good with reducibility.
Minera’s DRI is ideal in replacing scrap as metallic feed in steelmaking for use in secondary steel sectors. Also, the low sulphur content in our DRI makes it a more preferred intermediary for better quality steel.
Minera DRI has limited known gangue elements that enable the electric furnace operators to calibrate their process parameters suitably. It is non-pyrophoric, free from tramp materials viz. Copper, Zinc, Tin, Chromium, Tungsten, Molybdenum, etc. that are usually present in scrap. Minera DRI has especially been found to be an excellent alternative feed for mini steel plants, allowing them to use lower grades of scrap for the rest of the charge or to produce higher grades of steel.
Minera’s DRI is ideal for use in Induction furnaces, Electric Arc Furnaces and in Blast Furnaces

OUR PROCESS

At Minera’s dedicated sponge iron plant, iron ore pellets created at pellet plant are tumbled with coal in a rotary kiln and combusted for 12 hours to remove oxygen from the ore – creating DRI (Directed Reduced Iron.)

ECO-FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY

ECO-FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY

Green-solar

All the aspects of the sponge iron production process have been thoughtfully designed to reduce waste. Hot gas from the sponge iron production process is passed through the Waste Heat Recovery Boiler generating super-heated steam. The excess heat and gases are used by the CPP (Captive Power Plant) to produce up to 8MW power. To prevent air pollution, de-dusters are installed to convert dry dust to wet dust.
